Thoughts on this year's ChrisMix

Well, If you have come this far into cyberspace to share your thoughts on this mix then you are either a dear friend, a fellow music nut or, both. In any case, Thanks!

Live With Me...to kick things off right Mr. Charlie's R&B drive was just the ticket! - Although not toooo Christmassy I love Mick's line: "My best friend, he shoots water rats and feeds them to his geese"

Day After Day...been on a Chrissie kick ever since I saw The Pretenders play at Verizon this summer (along with the Stray Cats & ZZ Top...but more on them later)

For Your Life...first time this gem has EVER been played live: London 12/10/07 God Bless you Ahmet Ertegün!

Satisfied...Sgt. Hilka sent me a copy of these guys - WOW! what an apt title; by the end of that number I IS quite Satisfied. Keep 'em coming Johnny!

It Really Is (A Wonderful Life)...thanks to Kevin Hotz (host of the inevitable "Just Ask Kevin" radio call-in show) who hooked me up with Paste Magazine. Each issue contains a CD sampler...nice Hoilday segue into a more mellow section.

Thank You...from Spearhead's slightly preachy but unabashedly groovaliscious 2001 concept album "Stay Human" thanks for the copy Rob & Anna

Can You Get To That...George Clinton's gang circa '71 proving there is more to Funkadelic than infectious grooves

When you base your love on credit
And your loving days are done
Checks you signed with a-love and kisses
Later come back signed "insufficient funds"

thanks to Henry Coy for giving this to brother Doug

Debris...Rod wasn't the only singer in this good timing band which reminds me of a British version of the Meters...we miss you Ronnie, what soul!

Wham...when it's time to pick up the pace again who better than Stevie Ray. In this Lonnie Mack cover he uses every trick in the book!

Pulp Wood...while in the instumental rockin' blues mode we trots out another SRV influence.

Tush...See you at the Rods and Cones reunion at the Noodle on the 27th!

Hot Pants...still the Godfather of Soul (he was SuperBad last year)

Fire In The Hole...Doug E. Fresh WILL play this Thelonius Monk style number in '08 or I'll break his damn fingers...love this song...now who's gonna play the pedal steel part?

Que Nadie Sepa Mi Sufrir... Don't know what all Mr. Hidalgo is singing here but you can sure sense "no one knows the way he suffers!" & what picking...Viva Los Lobos!

Somethings Gotta Give...AlG came back from The Vogue all abuzz about & I thank him for the copy of this John Butler Trio

I Call On You...Reminds me of Matthew Sweet: tight harmonies, sweeping backing vocals, simply a great pop song repleate with the obligatory SGL. Thanks "Dollar Bill" Adams for spinning "Girlfriend" all those years ago & if you're wondering "Cracker Where Art Thou"? keep listening...(ahh, the old Kerosene Hat Trick)

The Song Remains The Same...Speaking of Searing Guitar Leads, how could I resist another Zep. This one newly remastered & fresh from Warrenville, thanks TDog..."we know your smokin' wherever you are"

Back In Our Minds...no one plays the musical saw (or says "we are") like Funkadelic!

Here at SuperRad Records we are flush the Kaizen spirit! So in our effort for "continuous improvement" please do comment..."we'll try to do better next time...good night Canada"

First, would like to know artists/cuts beyond the 18 listed on insert, e.g. the "pulling your leg" rap in the late 20's- then, the Christmas carol that followed it. Others I dug were Mindy Smith (we got an iPod for Christmas, so am asking kids to show me how to download her holiday album, on which that cut resides- had never heard of her before)- along w/the Faces cut, Debris, (kind of forget how good the early Faces were), John Butler good, need to see them at one of their fairly regular Vogue gigs. Hearing James and Funkadelic serves to remind me that this white boy can't dance- oh, well. Pretenders brings back good memories of a summer Verizon night (have not heard any more about future of Verizon- have you?).
Sorry I couldn't get to blogspot- feel free to cut/paste this into that if appropriate. When time permits, please let me know about the other cuts.
A winner, as always- sending a link to Debris, think you will like it.

Well, I didn't want to give away the "hidden tracks" until everyone had the mix for a while so, I guess it's OK now to tell you, Brad the first on #23 was Tom Waits (as if you couldn't tell) then on #26 it's Bebo Norman & 30th & at last LAST is Cracker off theri last release "Greenland"

Yep, DC, hitting "anonymous" worked just fine- able to post.
Always look FW to the Mix- just didn't feel much like doing one myself this year, which is why you got several of ones I have been listening to- glad to hear you like what you have heard so far. The "world mix" is just that- a mix- actually came from Jerry Maulin, so he should get the kudos.

What I appreciate about the World Beat Jerry mashed-up was how it also included American (or certainly American sounding) numbers - I mean since when are we not part of the world - Kudos Jerry.

Speaking of American sounding
Your "Alabama 3" mix has been getting even more play around here - Great stuff - thanks, Brad. Wouldn't have guessed they were British.

O Swinging One, CEO of SuperRad Records:

Re: "Live With Me": Keith Richards' guitar playing will exude a Chuck Berry influence as long as he twangs that thang.

Re: "Satisfied": Didn't know about K. Denson before, but that's one tight ensemble. The electric piano takes me back to the CTI records of my college days.

Re: "It Really Is": Likewise didn't know about Mindy S., but I checked out her website anbd her Wikipedia bio. So frefreshing to experience a straighforwardly healthy take on the world. Mellifluous voice, too.

Re: "Can You Get To That": Had never heard acoustic guitar in a Funkadelic tune. Was that typical of their very-early-70s output?

Re: "Fire In The Hole": the great charm of Becker-Fagan compositions has always been the unexpected melodic / harmonic turn, on full display here.

As I said the other day, I'm still curious as to how you put these together. Arre you mainly driven by sonic or thematic considerations, or how the sequence is going to unfold, or what?

Chrismix songs sparked blogger’s seizures....

SOMEWHERE, USA - Now that surgeons have operated on an anynomous blogger's brain, his/her favorite musicians no longer makes him/her ill. Four years after being diagnosed with epilepsy, the blogger recently underwent brain surgery at Long Island Jewish Medical Center to cure a rare condition known as musicogenic epilepsy.

John/Jane Doe, was suffering as many as 10 grand mal seizures a day, despite being treated with medications designed to control them. The condition became so bad he/she eventually had to quit his/her job and leave the church choir where he/she sang.

Eighteen months ago, he/she began to suspect that music on the recent Chrismix CDs were triggering some of his/her seizures. He/she recalled being at a recent Clingfest and collapsing when the last version of the Chrismix started playing, and then remembered having a previous seizure when he/she heard the mix.

His/her suspicions were confirmed on a visit to the Long Island medical center last February, when he/she played Chrismix 2006 on his/her iPod for doctors. Soon after, he/she suffered three seizures.

"Being that the seizures could be triggered by the music, this was a very interesting opportunity to study his/her brain," said Dr. Ashesh Mehta, the hospital's director of epilepsy surgery.

During the first surgery, doctors implanted more than 100 electrodes in the right side of his/her brain to pinpoint the abnormal area of his/her brain.

The surgeons followed that procedure with a second surgery to remove the electrodes, along with parts of his/her brain suspected of causing the seizures.

"We used the latest techniques, including image guidance, to pinpoint the areas of abnormality, and the operating microscope to perform the procedure during a four-hour operation," Mehta said.

Within three days, the man/woman was released from the hospital and has not experienced a seizure since.
